Traffic crashes can happen to anyone at any time. Proper installation of your child’s car seat can help prevent child passenger injuries. WA law (RCW 46.61.687) requires a child MUST be restrained in a Child Restraint System (CRS) until 8 years of age or 4 feet and 9 inches (57 inches) or taller in height. Additionally, any child under the age of 13 years shall be transported in the back seat of a vehicle when it is practical to do so. Our nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs) can help you learn how to properly install a child restraint system and safely transport your child based on age, weight, height, physical development and needs.

Often a parent or caregiver asks: “What is the “best” child restraint. The best CRS is the one that is best for YOU because YOU are the one who is going to use it! Additional features to consider are: the one that fits your child, the one that fits your car, the one that you will use correctly every time, and the one you can afford. Once you have your CRS, we can help you become familiar with your equipment and know how to use it properly. As CPSTs, we will instruct you in the following aspects of CSR usage:

  • To identify safety, installation, manufacture date and recall information for your car seat using both the car seat manual and your car’s owner’s manual.
  • To identify the car seat parts and their functions.
  • To locate and position your car seat.
  • To determine which seat belt method is best to secure the car seat.
  • To correctly install your CRS based on manufacturer and vehicle guidelines.
  • To correctly secure your child.
